How To Shoot A Hockey Ball

SCA Hockey Camp Director shares a mental checklist for shooting that can help you take your game to the next level!


HITTING TECHNIQUE CHECKLIST

COACHING POINTS

Posture:

  1. Double V Grip

  2. Sit low- two bent knees

  3. Arms away from the body- critical

  4. Hands together- top of stick, half way down grip for short grip

  5. Feet square to the passing line

Action: 

  1. Use a flat backswing (baseball swing)

  2. Turn the left shoulder towards the ball

  3. Step with the left foot towards the ball toe pointing at target

  4. Finish with weight over front foot and hold 2 seconds

Stick: 

  1. Raise the stick in the backswing with left wrist- break wrist

  2. The stick is low at impact- long follow through

Ball:

  1. Left hand in line with ball of foot/shoulder line

Ball speed generated by:

  • Upper body rotation

  • Armand wrist action

  • Stick action

  • Transfer of weight

EMPHASIS
  • Stand square to the passing line

  • Play to each others forehand

  • Weighted pass (direction-speed-height)

  • Step forward with the left foot when playing the ball


SWEEP HITTING TECHNIQUE CHECKLIST

COACHING POINTS

Posture:

  1. Double V Grip

  2. Body weight over left leg

  3. Arms fully extended

  4. Toe points to target

  5. Hands are over the left foot at impact

  6. Hold the low finishing position (head over knee, over ankle)

Action: 

Make the back swing over the ground

Turn left shoulder towards the ball

Stick:

  1. The tip keeps pointing upwards

  2. Stick remains in contact with the surface for follow through

  3. Release right hand after impact

Ball:

  1. Slightly right and in front of the left foot

  2. Play the ball on the shaft just above the hook (sweet spot)

EMPHASIS
  • Stand square to the passing line

  • Play to each other forehand

  • Weighted pass (direction-speed-height)

  • Step forward with the left foot when playing the ball

  • Ensure ball positioning is far enough away from body
